I get that mixing thing, although it's virtually non-existent in my country's cuisine. But still, this one doesn't feel right at all.

This sounded really good... until the maple syrup thing. Why? Why?!

Don't get me wrong. Maple syrup is great. On pancakes or so, but this? This truly is an abomination.

Yep, I meant U series, which (at least where I live) were covering vast majority of the market. There was occasional HQ here and there, but not that often. AMDs offerings at the time were mediocre and nobody really used them so for me, that era basically overlaps with Intel U series hegemony when speaking about laptop cpus.

I mean mainstream processors of that age. Even regular i7s of 7th gen were just dual cores with HT.

I'm a lazy fuck. That's why I use openSUSE Tumbleweed myself that has snapper preconfigured. I roll updates once I have time/will, sometimes twice a week, sometimes multiple months between. It's fucking solid! And even if it breaks, it's couple minutes to get it back to working condition and then I wait a week and next update is fine. This is the best!

I have a colleague. She doesn't like Windows (more like she doesn't like MS spying), has a laptop with Ubuntu, but she also doesn't like change.

This put her in weird situation, when she still has PC with Windows 7, outdated firefox and complains youtube is borked all the time. And once she moves to laptop, there's old Ubuntu (more than couple major releases old) which was never updated, because "she liked it that way". Guess what? Similar problems.

I told her many times that if she wanted carefree linux experience, she should update it once in a while, there's no evil MS behind it, but no. She never updates because reasons. She rather visit some obscure website that presents some terminal commands she doean't understand, but copy them over anyway and voila... the linux is in even worse state than before.

That's why linux is not hotfix for everything.

Same here. I grew up in time and place where english was almost non existent for normal people. Then computers came, but they were gray bricks with no sound output outside PC speaker "beep beep". But the language was there already. For many years english was just written form with zero pronounciation for me. And once we finally got teacher that actually could speak (and who wasn't one lecture ahead of us) it was almost too late. That's why I uderstand quite well, especially written text, but once I have to speak myself... people think I came from stone age or something.

  • Hello, not sure how on-topic is this, but I'll ask anyway. Since I'm wrapping my head around this topic for long time to no avail. I'm planning to buy NAS mostly to store my music, pictures and documents on my place. At the beginning I'd like to keep it simple so I don't plan to install billion things on it. I would definitely want to install adblocker like PiHole/AdGuard. I'm also eye-ing Tailscale for remote access (no public IP) and Jellyfin/Emby for music streaming at home. So apart from usual NFS/SMB file shares, let's say there are these three apps I'd like it to run at the beginning. The NAS has to be as quiet as possible, so even thought it's more expensive, I'll have to go with SSD drives. Looking at prices two 2 TB (in mirror RAID) should be doable and should be enough space for me, at least for now. I'm no hoarder. I have few other "must-haves": 1. decently working companion app that automatically backups pictures from at least 2 android phones (my wife needs to deal with it and she'*s not really friends with tech stuff*) 2. possibility to upgrade storage other than just replacing drives for bigger ones 3. simple, easy to use (both setup and "rescue") scheduled backups to external USB drive 4. I knew I had something else but it completely slipped out of my head That brings me to what's available. I almost pulled the trigger on Synology DS423+. It looks reasonable powerful, I can put 4 SATA SSDs and 2 M.2... that's what I thought. But it turned out it's not possible to use M.2 as storage with anything but Synology's own overpriced drives that aren't even available in my country. So, it's just four SATA drives, which is... "not great, not terrible" as some would say. What seems to be a big plus is the DSM. Everyone I know really praises it. Plus it seems to have very good reputation in terms of longevity of devices. Then there is QNAP. Apparently their system QTS is not as polished as DSM, but everything needed should still be there. There's similarly priced, similarly equipped TS-462. It's just dual-core CPU, but has more RAM (not upgradeable though) and it seems it can accept M.2 as storage at least. As per internet research, the build quality is just as good as Synology. And then there's Asustor, which I heard about years ago and then completely forgot they exist. Last week my friend mentioned this name, so I checked their offering too. Well, Nimbustor AS5402T looks absolutely the best **on paper**! Well, it only has two regular drives, because it's got *FOUR* M.2 slots! I assume it's because SATA is on decline, but M.2 SSDs are cheaper than SATA nowadays so it's actually better for me to have the numbers reversed. And it's cheapest on top of it. So where's the catch? I presume the ADM system is piece of shit. Right? Or is it build quality that's bad? Reliability? IDK. Which of these three do you think would be the best for my needs? I'm more than open to other offerings and suggestions too! Thank you very much!

Hello, not sure whether this is right place to ask, but I'll ask anyway. I'm looking for mouse replacement, but I do need the mouse to be quieter than your usual "click click clik", as I often use it in the evening in a room with other people sleeping. Usage is about 50:50 office and single player gaming, so I don't need *the best* sensor tracking or the fanciest RGB (I nor need nor want that at all), I just want well working, silent mouse. I hold my mouse mostly in claw/fingertip grip, so I can't operate something big, Deathadder-like. Ambidextrous shape is fine (maybe even preferred), as long as it has 2 thumb buttons on the left side. I used to have Logitech G305 which was almost perfect, except for 2 things: 1) very loud clicks and 2) mouse wheel got nasty swollen over time to the point it stopped rolling at all. I'm using something people describe as "PWNAGE symm 2 clone" from local store brand, that is exactly what I need (smaller shape, silent), but its sensor is somehow starting to act weird after like 3 years? It's been discontinued so I can't buy replacement one. Or if you know better place to ask (other than /r/...), I'd be glad. Thank you very much!

Hello, I just finished the game I was playing (Book of Demons, would give it 7/10) and I'm looking what to play next. I don't have as much time for gaming as I used to (job, children, etc.) so I usually have about an hour at the evening to play. Some games are tough to fit into this because it breaks immersion too much and everyday having to remember when I left just to quit soon after is just... tedious? Wrong? Idk and I don't want to spoil good games with it. My friend gifted me Disco Elysium for christmas and it looks ver promising. But is it possible to squeeze it into this schedule? Or does it break the game too much? Thank you for your input.

Hello everyone, I hope I came to the right place to ask my stupid question. I'm currently working in a company that stuck way way back in time. I'm talking *some people are still working in DOS* level back in time. There is some revamping of this in progres, but it's going to be a long run. The "IT department" (called computing department, lol) consist basically of 2 people, boss and me. Boss loves the old days, he's "happily" using Win XP on his computer and hates everything newer than Win7, although half of everything he tries to do doesn't work there anymore (and don't even start with security of the OS). Anyway... that's about the company background and what to expect. During currently ongoing upgrades to get this company at least to 21st cwntury, there will be some sw licencing happening. I'm expecting like buying dozens of Office 2021 keys and some other standalone soft too. But there's problem with managing those keys, as there is no precedence, no rules and everything's going to be from the scratch almost. People are coming and going, PCs are dying (remember, there are still some DOS machines), hard drives replacing, etc. etc. Windows domain? Not in this company. Ever. So, how do you keep track of what is installed and where? Thank you very much.

Browsing the web I came across this (meta) search engine. From the first glance, it seems promising and giving quite a good results to my searches. Definitely better than Google, Bing or DDG, which tend to be full of SEO/ads/AI bullshit these days. Does anyone use it? It somehow implies it's open source and indeed there is github https://github.com/PresearchOfficial too, but I can't find any link from the presearch.com itself to it. It's just... IDK, weird?

I'd like something like *JBL Charge*, but with USB port that I can connect to PC and speaker would act like external audio device. I've only found ones with USB-A to insert pen-drive, which is not the same. I use headphones exclusively at my PC, but there are times when I'd like to show something to my wife and since I have only one pair of headphones it's no sound for either me or her. Audio quality is not crucial, so I thought I'd buy bluetooth speaker (which I can use everywhere with my phone) and connect it with one USB cable and it's done. It would charge when I'm out and I could use it whenever I needed. Well, it seems this idea was wrong since every single one I've checked has USB port only for charging. Are there any of these that act as USB audio device? Does thing like this even exist? If so I'm probably too stupid to pick right keywords to search engine. Thank you everyone!

I'm in Europe, looking for family car and have no idea what to look for, as cars are far from *my thing*. I'll start with a bit of info. We don't drive that much, most often just short rides in town (like groceries, kids to school, etc.) or short drives to nearby towns (10-15km). Longer distances about once a month (50+ km). Slughtly bigger car is a preference as we usually have stuff to carry in boot. Currently we have old Ford Mondeo turnier from 2003 and due to its engine problems it needs to be replaced. I have around 15k € budget, so will be looking at used market cars. Because of intended use I scratched out all diesel offerings. Right? Leaving me with either gasoline or hybrid options. Full EV are probably no go due to price. I've picked a few possible cars from local/nearby sellers and would really appreciate your input on them (or alternatives I should be looking at). Ford Focus wagon from 2019. Has 1.0 ecoboost engine (92 kW / 125 hp), has some nice equipment options like auto AC, heated seats, steering wheel and front screen. It has a mileage of just about 90k km (60k miles). It's priced slightly under 13k €. Toyota Auris sports wagon hybrid, from 2018. It's typical Toyota prius-like hybrid with 1.8 liter engine and electric motor. Not plug-in hybrid. Mileage of around 150k km (100k miles). It's slightly less equipped than the Focus (and it doesn't support android auto or carplay) and is priced around 15k €. 2019 Kia Cee'd wagon. It is probably the *simplest* car in this list - it has 1.4 liter engine without direct injection and without turbo (73 kW) - does it mean less things to break? Other equipment is pretty good though (parking camera, heated seats and wheel, ...), it has mileage if just 40k km (25k miles) and it should still be in factory warranty till 2026. Priced at 12.5k €. There's also VW Passat variant 2016 plug-in hybrid. It's decent condition, although it has over 210k km (like 140k miles). I don't have option to recharge at home (flat), but there are 2 or 3 public stations in walk distance. Priced at roughly 16k € it's slightly over my intended budget, but it's a bigger more comfortable car and has plenty of optional features (like parking camera, driving assistants, full led lights, etc.). And there's about another gazzillion of cars and my brain hurts... Would you please help me decide?
