For this Sunday Kino Night, ‘tis the season for horror, so first up is Demons (1971), a Japanese revenge tale centering on an 18th-century exiled samurai who gathers 100 ryo to buy his way back into the good graces of his clan. Unfortunately, he’s also infatuated with a geisha who is about to be sold to another man to pay off her debts, which just so happen to total 100 ryo. Turns out she’s actually in leagues with the other guy, and they make off with his money. Cue total jokerfication as the samurai goes on a rampage of revenge. This is considered one of the best films of renowned auteur Toshio Matsumoto, who is otherwise best-known for Funeral Parade of Roses (1969), which we have not yet watched. Currently ranked #12 on Letterboxd’s [Top 250 horror films of all time](https://letterboxd.com/darrencb/list/letterboxds-top-250-horror-films/). Next is Didi (2024), a coming-of-age comedy about a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy in 2008, who is just hitting puberty and needs to learn how to navigate life, be cool, and talk to girls. Social awkwardness ensues. Pretty much mid90s (2019) but for Zillennials. A lot of critical acclaim for this one, and it’s getting some awards buzz, so let’s check it out. It is the debut feature of director Sean Wang, who was born in 1994, so I suspect it’s at least partially autobiographical. For this Friday Movie Night, the people have demanded more horror. ‘Tis the season, so we will watch I Saw the Devil (2010), which centers on a Korean serial killer who murders for fun. A detective decides to track him down and capture him, and a cat-and-mouse game ensues between the two. Expect a whole lot of blood and gore as the film shows the exploits of its resident sicko. This is the best-known and best-regarded film of Korean director Kim Jee-woon, who also did A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), which we have not watched. Currently ranked #36 on Letterboxd’s [Top 250 horror films of all time](https://letterboxd.com/darrencb/list/letterboxds-top-250-horror-films/). After that is Sing Sing (2024), a prison drama about an African-American man who is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. While he stews in confinement, he joins the prison’s theatre group and it becomes his lifeline amidst the inhumane conditions of the Amerikkkan “justice” system. Theatre kids really are everywhere these days. This is by far the most popular and best-regarded film of director Greg Kwedar to date. For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Goyokin (1969), a Japanese chanbara film about a ronin (a masterless samurai) who renounces his loyalties after failing to stop the massacre of a village. He plots his revenge against the perpetrators to prevent a new massacre from taking place. Dudes are gonna rock. Pretty much a cowboy movie, but with a samurai. Expect a lot of sword fights. Director is Hideo Gosha, who specialized in chanbara stuff; this is arguably his magnum opus. After that is Alien: Romulus (2024), the latest installment in the oft-retooled Alien franchise, this time from Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez, the man behind Don’t Breathe (2016). A bunch of scientists check out a spooky abandoned space ship and, surprise!, there’s a diabolical alien that implants itself into their bodies, bursts from their chests, and so on. Sounds like they pretty much remade Alien (1979). I guess we’ll find out. IMPORTANT NOTE: please use a VPN whenever visiting Hextube, or anywhere else on the internet, for that matter. Protect your privacy. For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, the people have demanded horror, so we’ll watch a particularly popular modern horror movie: Insidious (2010). It centers on a couple who move into a spooky house and then become shocked when spooky things start happening. Demons start possessing their son and then go “boo!” a lot. I would simply move out of the house, but hey, I don’t live in a horror movie. Director is James Wan, the guy who brought us The Conjuring (2012), as well as, uhh, Aquaman (2018). A ringing endorsement. I guess it is slop night. After that, by request, is Happiness of the Katakuris (2001), an absurdist comedy-musical from exceptionally prolific Japanese auteur Takashi Miike. Surprisingly, the only other Miike we’ve watched is his video-game adaptation Yakuza (2007). This seems like a good place to start. It centers on a family that runs a guest house out in the middle of nowhere. Their guests suddenly start dying, and they have to go to increasingly ridiculous lengths to cover up each incident, including taking out others who discover the truth. Hilarity ensues as the cartoonish antics pile up. A cult classic. Obviously he didnt deserve the harassment he got regardless. Like even if he was dogshit he wouldnt have deserved that. But I just rewatched Phantom Menace for the first time in awhile. Young friend of mine are going through the star wars movies because she was a sheltered homeschooled kid and hadnt seen them. Already did the OT, starting on the prequels. Other than the obvious "oh wow, the racial stereotypes of literally three different alien species in this movie is insane", the main takeaway my rewatch gave me is "wow ok, Jake LLoyd is average at worst". He was just like, a regular kid actor? Nothing to write home about like say, young Maise Williams or something. But absolutely fine?

If the first Jurassic Park movie was about humans trying to contain nature and use it for their own gains, then The Lost World: Jurassic Park is a movie about humans DOMINATING nature through any means necessary and using it for their own gains. sigh It's bigger, bloatier, noisier and more heavily packed with less intense action sequences featuring characters we have barely gotten to know about because the movie's writing can't seem to know what idea or issue to focus on at one moment, showing us glimpses of characters and objects that might prove to be important, dedicating whole shots to them to eventually led to a luke-warm, fizzling out (what better example than the damn opening scene! It almost made me yawn) -- but it also is about pretty much the same idea and thesis we have already done and covered in Jurassic Park. This is oddly referenced in the movie when one of the main character says to the villain, "Now you are [insert first movie's villain name]", like, really? The villain was pretty much a standard villain that you see in a thousand movies. Even the music wasn't that inspiring, it had bit more action and bite to it but it wasn't memorial and I wouldn't be able to hum it if there was a gun to my head. The character's are mighty, mighty stupid idiots. These people that are scientists, businessmen, safari rangers seem dumber than the usual horror movie protagonists. That is not to say the movie is never sane and good. The technical aspects of it - Spielberg's direction included - are amazing. There's a motion and momentum to the action sequences and a feeling of weight to the dinosaurs that makes everything feel more authentic and realistic and it is a delight to watch. The dinosaurs look - exept for some of the dated special effects - really good too. T-Rex and the small compies and the velociraptors are all equally a delight to watch. This would be such a better movie if only the action scenes were done in a way that was less dumb (though they are still thrilling if you can stop thinking logically about them and just feast your eyes and ears on them) and the plot was a lot more compelling and thoughtout than what we got. The worst thing about The Lost World: Jurassic Park is that it feels like it starts with a limp and then just keeps limping in it's half-hidden subtleness and half-heavy action way and feels like it never truly opens. Even the first big scene which looked amazing (the InGen making landfall on the island and getting to work) just doesn't payoff, it fizzles out in it's conclusion. My overral rating would be a generous 6/10. P.S: Julianne Moore was more beautiful in this movie than any shot of nature or dinosaurs.

Probably the only good movie after Infinity War except Spiderman 3. The opening sequence was the best one in a superhero movie. The movie itself is turn-off your brain kind of fun. The overall plot is still mid but the characters kind of feel great. I don't even know who the French guy is but he was probably the most influential character in the movie. Evil Woman Xavier was also great and fun to watch. The irony is great throughout the movie and it regularly shits on Marvel and Disney but still has to be a marvel movie regardless so idk why they tried to both-side the movie when it could've been a pure parody. Also it's out on Streaming hence it's available for Torrent. I grabbed a copy from 1337x.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Time of the Gypsies (1988), a Serbian black comedy about a young Roma man who discovers he has telekinetic powers, which comes in handy in the crumbling (and increasingly neoliberalizing) hellscape that is 1980s Yugoslavia. He uses his powers in his quest to get rich quick, but the criminal underworld threatens to undo him; darkly-comic antics ensue. Director is renowned auteur Emir Kusturica, whose Black Cat White Cat (1998) and Underground (1995) we previously watched; those were both great, funny films, and this appears to be in the same vein. One of the highest-rated Serbian films on Letterboxd. Next is The Browning Version (1951), an extremely British drama about an aging professor who is forced to retire early due to a heart condition. He is at first content with his lot, only to discover that his wife is cheating on him, his students think he’s a joke, and his colleagues have secretly despised him for years. Cue midlife crisis as he tries to repair his ego and reassure himself that his life has meant something. Arguably the magnum opus of prolific director Anthony Asquith, who is otherwise best-known for Pygmalion (1938). Considered one of the best British films of the 1950s. For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Another Year (2010), a British slice-of-life drama from Mike Leigh, who is best-known for Naked (1993) and Secrets &n Lies (1996), neither of which we have watched. It centers on a happily-married old bougie couple whose happiness is interrupted by the incursions of their shitty family and friends, all of whom are determined to bring their drama into the couple’s lives. This is just what life is like in the UK. A lot of critical acclaim for this, and we’ve never watched any of Leigh’s stuff, so let’s check it out. After that is Kneecap (2024), the first rap musical film made entirely in the Irish language. Follow the fictionalized real-life tale of a trio of staunchly republican, working-class Belfast dudes who start a rap group to save their native tongue and decolonize their country from the Br*tish. This is the debut feature of director Rich Peppiatt, and has already been receiving some awards buzz. Currently the highest-rated Irish-language film on Letterboxd. We’ll give it a try. Honestly, a streaming service should buy the rights to this and put out an Orgy of the Dead variety show every year. It's a nudie cutie where women take turns dancing topless and a couple has to watch for some reason. The dialogue between the hosts and the monster characters could be perfect banter and a Greek chorus, but it just goes nowhere. It's so captivatingly bad it could easily make your annual Halloween watch list. I could see a modern version working so well that's full of drag, burlesque, and whatever other weird freaky stuff you can come up with. The 1965 version is camp, it needs to go all out gay. You can probably find it on YouTube or other means, I got reminded about Orgy of the Dead from a Mubi email, it may not be available in your country on there though.
