Does anybody like the Trap Mechanism trinket?
  • sirxdaemon sirxdaemon 4d ago 100%

I think an additional increase to the number of traps could be a buff to the trinket. Now whether that change makes sense, even I'm not so sure on. But when I commented on the number of traps, I wanted to speak on that which I felt was the main advantage to the trinket, as well as its weak point, in my opinion.

The trapped floors in earlier regions seem to have less traps than later regions. Maybe that's inaccurate and the later regions are simply bigger and the percentage remains. It seemed more sparse and later, denser.

This is one of the easier trinkets to level so I had it at +3 by the sewers. The floors that followed should've all had traps, aside from boss levels, if memory serves.

I think perhaps changes haven't been made because it hasn't been a priority. I believe other trinkets have endured changes as well, like the Eye of Newt and I want to say Exotic Crystal? I'm not sure either of those need a buff though. The trap mechanism feels like it needs one.

  • I'm curious if there are people that consistently get this. And why? Personally, it's pretty much a tie between this and the chaotic censer for my least favorite trinket. At +3, even in the demon halls, I felt the number of traps was lacking, in comparison to how useful other trinkets are. Maybe if the trinket also took trap area of effect into consideration and spread the traps out to provide more entire dungeon coverage, the current number of traps it increases wouldn't feel so meager. Part of the problem is the trinket doesn't synergize as well as others. Even on a rogue and a talisman of foresight, it felt lackluster. I imagine it'd be more trouble than it's worth outside of those circumstances. Or am I totally wrong on this and there's something I'm missing? I mean, the thing has remained unchanged since trinkets were introduced; about 5 months ago. Perhaps for a reason?

Would be nice to have a user's instance displayed in the results on the user search page. I was glad to see the change for the feed and post page and it would be helpful to be able to distinguish who's who at a glance. Particularly when you're trying to find a specific user and there's multiple accounts across instances with the same nickname.

By the time you reach the halls, you should have Magic Map identified and have at least 4 scrolls for each level. Once you enter each one, pop a scroll and beeline for the demon spawner. Taking them out will make the fight against the final boss easier and clearing the levels before that less annoying.

Consider using a potion of mind vision followed by a scroll of lullaby after you've used magic map. Putting a level to sleep makes clearing it a breeze. You may want to use mind vision and a scroll of retribution for really annoying situations you don't want to deal with like a bunch of scorpions. Retribution is more effective if you're low(preferably less than a third) on health.

Light isn't too important on level 21 but you'll generally want to have a torch up at most times to avoid getting surprise attacked.

Having enough armor makes the game much more manageable. It's a good idea to have +7 or +8 scale or plate armor before fighting DM-300. You can beat the game with +1 plate armor but it's not recommended for newer players.

Be wary when running around with less than half health in the halls. Mobs there can easily chunk your health so you may want to top up with healing earlier than you would at higher levels.

One of the gas clouds the censer spits out spawns grass like the wand of regrowth. From the point of impact, it will expand and the grass area will grow for a couple of turns. The inner tiles will refresh and respawn if they're trampled, as the area grows outward, so throwing items at those squares can net more dew and seeds. I think using a wand of blast should work as well.

Perhaps @CrayonRosary@lemmy.world could help you out since they mentioned wanting to do the same. Or perhaps the dev. I know they're pretty responsive to bug reports. It's been ages since I actually did any programming so I'm not of much help I'm afraid.

Yeah, I would probably use a fear stone if I had one. Going back and using a fadeleaf would be a cheaper option but might result in jumping from the fire and into the frying pan.

Here's the dev's comment a month ago, in regard to your question.

Unfortunately I don’t intend to show off accuracy and evasion stats because the numbers aren’t particularly meaningful. The hero has 10 accuracy and 5 evasion to start, and gains +1 of each per level. This tells you nothing about the actual hit/dodge chance on a per-enemy basis. the only real way for me to show this information would be to show the exact hit/dodge chance for each enemy, which feels like way too much information.

Usually you get a combination of additional grass and water with the mossy clump. At least at +0 or +1. Some grass is better than no grass. With the badder bosses challenge, you really don't want to face-tank Goo.

My play style uses a lot on alchemy so I prefer the mossy clump. Having grass on the Goo level can really help as well. If you can get past Goo, I find the game is mostly won and the rest is pretty manageable. The clump is probably my favorite at the moment.

All identified potions that weren't used for a puzzle, except healing and XP of course. All IDed scrolls except ID, remove curse, and transmutation. Stone of clairvoyance and flock I rarely use and is typically energy fodder. I'll buy shop stuff to boil down if I'm rolling in dough. Trinkets like the shard of oblivion and mossy clump will pay back in dividends so unless you're strapped for healing or something, the early investment is worth it.

It's costly but sometimes I'll prioritize them and get a +3 before Tengu. I might farm to level 10 on floor 4 and get to it before entering floor 7.

I find I get caught in the gases with some frequency. Sometimes I don't notice the censer activating and dive right into it. But that's a me problem. Other times, it fires in inopportune situations.

I haven't tried the salt cube yet. It seems like a worse vial of blood, but what do I know, I could be wrong. I like the shard of oblivion and didn't think the recent buff was needed.

    2
  • Maybe evaluation on the adjusted censer is premature but I still feel the trinket is not worthwhile. Even if I knew exactly when it's about to fire off, it still seems too inconsistent to pick over others. While the censer probably won't fire directly on top of a scroll or potion, they can get caught up in the path of a firestorm/icestorm. Even if the censer doesn't shoot when you're in the shop, it could fire right by the door and end with the shopkeeper leaving. My priority with the trinkets is to improve my win rate. The risk/reward ratio is not good. The reward feels meager and the risk, while I guess manageable, doesn't compare with other lower risk yet higher reward trinkets. I think for it to be worth picking, you would need to have warning before it sets off and have a clue as to which gas. It's a censer that takes a while to shoot out; I think it would make sense that you'd smell it before it's dealt. But that's just me. Anyone really liking the censer? Are there strategies for it? Only thing I've got is throwing items at the grass squares adjacent to the point of impact since they can keep spawning grass for a couple of turns, depending on where the gas landed.

Just a suggestion with the shard of oblivion, instead of manually controlling automatic equipment identification, maybe it could take the bomb identification function.

The one that spawns grass? That was like the only beneficial gas to me.

    1
  • I'm curious on people's thoughts on the censer. Personally, it's too random for me to warrant picking. It can set off in narrow corridors, making that the highest priority and danger. It can fire off in a shop, so now I'm thinking of dropping it off before the door. It can activate while you're eating and you could be caught in a paralyzing cloud for any mob to clobber down on. Any potions or scrolls on the ground, along with other destructibles, are vulnerable to firestorms or icestorms that come willy nilly. The durational activation means it doesn't jive with speed builds. It can be fun to try out at least once but not my cup of tea. Maybe if there was a warning before it's set off, or you could inspect it to get an idea if it'll fire off soon, I might give it another whirl.

  • How good is wand of warding really?
  • sirxdaemon sirxdaemon 1mo ago 100%

The invisibility helps in avoiding enemies. Walk away twice from a mob that's spotted you and they'll lose sight of you. Every time that you back away from a mob, while you're in the garden, you can make a sneak attack, so it's easy to kill enemies there.

With the huntress and her bow, ideally you want to bow down enemies before they reach the garden. Without a wand of warding, I just pass turns while keeping an eye on the doors in the adjoining room. A door that suddenly opens may indicate an mob entering the room and ready to be shot at. I'll start shooting once I think they've reached my line of fire and if there's no hit after a few shots, it could be that a mob spawned in the room and was exiting instead.

For other classes, resting in the garden may be a detriment. The time spent holing up in a garden could've been used to explore; potentially finding useful items. It's rare that I eat and heal in the garden with the other classes.

Hostile Champions, Badder Bosses, On Diet, Swarm Intelligence, and Forbidden Runes for challenges.

The corruption wand can be powerful but the randomness makes me often prefer the simple magic missile over it.

I'd always pick the wand of regrowth over any other wand. It's the most useful in my opinion. But I do play with a few challenges so that probably skews my choice. If there's a wand that could do with a slight nerf perhaps, I think it's regrowth.

Prismatic is useful for finding hidden rooms and somewhat high up on my list. And I would also generally take magic missile over warding.

With the option enabled, you can see post downvote tallies as well but it's displayed as a ratio. Unless I'm forgetting or just missed it, I haven't seen anyone comment on it either. Good or bad. Personally, I don't like it and would prefer separate numbers for the upvotes and downvotes. The ratio stands out. Not just within Connect UI but also compared to other platforms' design. Separate numbers would make the UI more standard and also reduce the extra spacing to make room for the height difference. If you completely disagree, that's totally valid and I'm actually more curious to see these comments, for perspective.

I only use the block instance feature for my feeds and don't find the feature extending to blocking user comments useful. An option for the block instance feature to only block posts and not comments would be nice. I'd venture a guess that most people would prefer this and that there are very few entire instances where the nuclear option is necessary.

As far as I know, Lemmy Connect is currently the only way for individual users to block instances themselves. Sure, you can do this if you host your own instance but not everyone wants to go to that length. Specifically, you'll need to go into Settings, in the app, and tap on Blocked Settings, and from there you can manage your blocked instances, as well as communities and users. I want to also mention that Lemmy Connect has the ability to tag users. Super useful with all of the bad actors that are creeping in. **EDIT:** Unfortunately it seems blocking instances is broken in the current version, 1.0.68, but the dev has been updating practically daily recently so I think there'll be a fix out soon. **EDIT2:** And it's fixed.

Is Lemmy Connect the first and currently only way for individual users to block instances? I know you can block instances if you host an instance yourself, but not everyone wants to do so. We should be promoting this feature if indeed we are the only one with it as it has been in popular demand, especially lately, with Threads now being a thing.

The ability to add and modify custom tags, that only your account would see, to any user was essential for me on Sync for Reddit. I think with the huge influx of new users on Lemmy and Kbin, as well as the massive amounts of bot accounts that we've also seen being created, it's certainly a useful feature to have I hope it also gets added to Connect. In terms of priority, this may not be that critical, but the sooner it's added, the sooner people can manage our experience and navigate better. This feature was what kept me with Sync and getting Sync Pro, despite a kerfuffle at the time; because I had invested time in tagging users and didn't want to repeat the effort and start from scratch with another app.
