I for one welcome Bluesky, the ATmosphere, BTS ARMY, and millions of Brazilians to the fediverses!

Maybe competition will make the Fediverse better? With or without Bluesky in the loop, we could take inspiration from their unique features and what people like about their platform. I certainly didn't know they take onboarding seriously and offer shared blocklists and useful stuff like that...

We'll see about that. AI is currently approaching the trough of disillusionment on the gartner hype cycle. That's certainly not something one of the largest AI companies will admit to, but probably still true.

And btw, the article doesn't load for me. Not sure if it's my browser or if I'm getting geo blocked... But the page is just white. No text.

If you don't know what it is, I'd say click "Desactivar". You can later on re-enable it if you find something is missing. But certainly a good idea to check whether it's bloatware or spyware, maybe someone knows more. You can also check how much data usage an app caused, see if it sends lots of data somewhere.

I wouldn't download / update until this gets resolved. Or maybe look for alternatives, or compile/build it yourself. It doesn't necessarily mean it's the developers fault. Could be something else. But maybe don't download something that might contain a Trojan.

Sure it's the same seller?? I'm pretty sure Amazon does not show different prices to different people. But the same product is often offered by several sellers, for different prices. And if for example one of you has Prime and fast shipping activated, it'll show the fastest option. Which might be more expensive. I'm pretty sure that's what's happening here. It'll say somewhere: Sold by XY, ships from Amazon.com. Make sure it says the same thing there.

Of if she put it into the cart and now Amazon sticks with the exact option... If the specific seller increased their prices over night, the shopping cart might stick to the seller and it becomes more expensive for her... While Amazon will offer you a different seller that's cheaper today. But everyone can choose which seller to buy from, if there are multiple for a product.

Sure, no need to explain. I think it's been appropriate to point it out.

And wow, quite some comments you got. I'm not sure if I agree with the negative ones. We've been requesting better moderation tools for a long time now. I wouldn't immeadiately do away with your effort. I share some concern about privacy and introducing "algorithms" and bots into the platform instead of making it more human... But nonetheless -we need good moderation. A lot of the issues are just technical in nature and can be solved. And you seem pretty aware of them. And there's always a balance and a potential of abuse that comes with power...

I think we should experiment and try a few things. A bot is a very good idea, since we won't get that into the Lemmy core software. I think mostly due to personal reasons. And that relates to the lemmy.ml situation. I'll have a look at the code. But I'm using PieFed instead of Lemmy. Which already attributes reputation scores to users. So this might be aligned with PieFed's project goals, maybe we can take some inspiration from your ideas.

You're right. I specified that because there are things like protection for minors, and I didn't want someone to defuse my argument by arguing about one exception from the rule that could be construed as banning books. And I think that's a fake argument. Obviously you don't read an erotic novel to your 8yo kid. But at high-school age you're pretty much allowed to start making own decisions. At least well-equipped to read about diversity and how other parts of the world work. Or telling fact from fiction or consuming art.

And I think at college lever or once you're officially an adult, there is little to no reason to keep information from you. That's something the nazis did, the Taliban does and other suppressive regimes and dictatorships. And these days we're discussing to do that in the USA, at least to the people who actually have time at hand to read books and learn about the world. Which becomes more difficult once you're older, have a stressful job etc. So that's exactly how to deal maximum damage without going full autocracy on all citizens.

And this kind of behaviour is something I struggle to relate with. I live far away from the USA in Europe. And while we certainly have idiots here, I don't see a major debate on keeping school-kids stupid, by stripping away their access to information. And I mean it's not where someone is from, everyone from the USA I've talked with also wouldn't accept that. I guess I'm just not talking that much to the idiots an bigots.

    Value.

They obviously have value if people want to read them (they're popular). Or they could have artistic value. Or document something and it's important to keep them around because the info inside might be important later on.

You can discard any books like Excel 2006 or Windows 8 beginners guide. I'd say they don't have any value anymore. Or like bad cooking books that no one reads anyways.

Also a library might not be an archive at the same time. So you could focus on which books actually have some use for the patrons and judge by if they're being used/read.

And I'd like to add: Selecting books and tidying up to make space for new popular books... And banning books are two very different things. Banning books for grown-ups isn't a good idea. Never, and under no circumstances. Unless it's 1933 and you're the nazis.

I think that's something you can learn. It definitely takes some training. But speaking from own experience, I think I started out as an introvert and in my very fist job I had to talk to lots of random strangers each day. And I adjusted. Nowadays I can start conversations easily, do smalltalk... I mean I'm probably still the same person and sometimes I like to talk and sometimes I don't like to open up at all. But I know what to say, how to keep a conversation going or end it if I like and it doesn't take that much effort. And I think that makes me a bit more at ease. Knowing I have that skill available. But it certainly took me some time and effort to get there.

And I'm still not particularly good at mimicking an extroverted person. But I don't care that much anymore. If I make mistakes, or I struggle with some conversational partner, that's just what it is. It makes me uncomfortable. But at some point I'm going to have other problems to deal with and I'm going to forget about it.

The LGBTQ mixes up several things. Sexuality and romantic attraction with gender identity. And we've also added skin color to the pride flag (because people of color also have special issues within the community.) So it's more a mix of several variables, spectrums and things that are part of being human. I think the common denomitor is that it has to do something with being marginalized and discriminated against. But it's not about one single concept.

That's a good question. I still struggle with the whole concept of identifying with some exact definitions and labels for oneself. I mean it's super useful to have words and labels for things. At times. Other times I'm not so sure. Is it really that important to disclose to other people whether you're into men, women, or mainly attracted to some, or how you fit into gender? Isn't it enough to be... yourself? (Genuine question.) I mean that's obviously important to you. And to (close) friends. But I sometimes don't see the reason why people are set on the exact subdivision of "queer" when talking to other people. Especially to people who aren't queer themselves.

And I mean the next question is whether that's useful in a conversation. I doubt people will know how to treat a sensory ... autist. They probably don't know how to handle any autist. So it might be of no use to tell them some exact term. You're just confusing them and you probably might have to start a short lecture anyways.

Additionally, it's complicated to add exact terms to a spectrum. I mean that's the point of a spectrum. It's blurry and not discrete and hard to tell whether a yellowish-green fits into yellow or green. And even the categories (number of colors) are arbitrary and made up.

Disclaimer: I'm not on the spectrum. I don't really know what I'm talking about or how life is for other people. I just know how it is to be me.

And with that said, I think it'd be useful to tell people about different aspects of autism. Maybe that helps to get a better picture. Just knowing it's different for everyone doesn't get you all the way. We could certainly try with some terms and letters and see if it helps people to memorize details about autism. Though, we should probably try not make it too simplistic, or this is going to be the next stereotypes.

Ich bin nicht ganz up to date.

  • Seems they recently changed something on Spotify and all the tools I've tried fail now. And [DownOnSpot](https://github.com/oSumAtrIX/DownOnSpot) which seems promising has received a cease and desist letter and got taken down. What do you people use? I want something that actually fetches the audio from Spotify, not just rip it from YouTube. And it has to work as of now. Does the latest commit from DownOnSpot work? Back when I tested it a few weeks ago it failed due to some API changes. Are there other tools floating around?

I just found [https://www.arliai.com/](https://www.arliai.com/) who offer LLM inference for quite cheap. Without rate-limits and unlimited token generation. No-logging policy and they have an OpenAI compatible API. I've been using runpod.io previously but that's a whole different service as they sell compute and the customers have to build their own Docker images and run them in their cloud, by the hour/second. Should I switch to ArliAI? Does anyone have some experience with them? Or can recommend another nice inference service? I still refuse to pay $1.000 for a GPU and then also pay for electricity when I can use some $5/month cloud service and it'd last me 16 years before I reach the price of buying a decent GPU... Edit: Saw their $5 tier only includes models up to 12B parameters, so I'm not sure anymore. For larger models I'd need to pay close to what other inference services cost.

tl;dr: Be excellent to each other, do something constructive here? I'm not sure anymore where the Threadiverse is headed. (The Threadiverse being this threaded part of the Fediverse, i.e. Lemmy, MBin, PieFed, ...) In my time here, I've met a lot of nice people and had meaningful conversations and learned lots of things. At the same time, it's always been a mixed bag. We've always had quite some argumentative people here, trolls, ... I've seen people hate on and yell at each other, and do all kinds of destructive things. My issue with that is: Negative behavior is disproportionately affecting the atmosphere. And I'd argue we have nowhere enough nice behavior to even that out. I [don't see Lemmy grow](https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/stats) for quite some time now. Seems it's now leveling off at a bit less that 50k monthly active users. And I don't see how that'd change. I'm missing some clear vision/idea of where we want to be headed. And I miss an atmosphere that makes people want to join or stay here, of all of the places on the internet. The saying is: "If you don't go forwards you go backwards". I'm not sure if this applies... At least we're not shrinking anymore. And I'm always unsure if the tone and atmosphere here changes subtly and gradually. I've always disagreed with a few dynamics here. But lately it feels like we're on the decline, at least to me. I occasionally keep an eye on the votes on my comments. And seems I'm getting fewer of them. Sometimes I reply to a post and not a single person interacts. Even OP seems to have abandoned their post moments after writing it. And also for nuanced and longer replies, I regularly don't get more than one or two upvotes. I think that used to be a bit better at some point. And I see the same thing happening with other peoples' comments. So it's not just me writing low-quality comments. What does work is stating simple truths. I regularly get some incoming votes with those. But my vision of this place isn't spreading simple truths, but have proper and meaningful discussions, learn things and new perspectives or just mingle with people or talk. But judging by the votes I observe, that isn't appreciated by the community here. Another pet peeve of mine is the link aggregator aspect of Lemmy. I'd say at least 80% of Lemmy is about dumping some political (or tech) news articles. Lots of them don't generate any engagement. Lots of them are really low-effort. OP just dumps something somewhere, no body text added, no info about what's interesting about it. And people don't even read those articles. They just read the title and react (emotionally) to that. In the end probably neither OP nor the audience read the article and it's just littering the place. Burying and diminishing other, meaningful content. (With that said: There are also nice (news) discussions going on at the same time. And Lemmy is meant to be a link aggregator. It's just that my perception is: it's skewed towards low quality, low engagement and random noise.) A few people here also don't really like political debate. And there's no escape from it here on Lemmy since so much revolves around that. And nowadays politics is about strong opinions, emotions and emotional reactions. And often limited to that. The dynamics of Lemmy reinforce the negative aspect of that, because the time when you're most incentivized to reply or react is, when it triggers some strong emotion in you, for example you strongly disagree with a comment and that makes you want to counter it and write your own opinion underneath. If you agree, you don't feel a strong emotion and you don't reply. And the majority of users seems to also forget to upvote in that case, as I lined out earlier. And we also don't write nuanced answers, dissect complex things and examine it from all angles. That's just effort and it's not as rewarding for the brain to do that as it is pointing out that someone is wrong. So it just fosters an atmosphere of being argumentative. Prospect ---------- I think we have several ways of steering the community: 1. Technology: Features in the software, design choices that foster good behavior. 2. Moderation: Give toxic people the boot, or delete content that drags down the place. Following: What remains is nice people and not adverse content. 3. The community I'd say 1 and 2 go without saying. (Not that everything is perfect with those...) But it really boils down to 3: The community. This is a fairly participatory place. We are the ones shaping the tone and atmosphere. And it's our place. It's kind of our obligation to care for it if we want to see it go somewhere. Isn't it? So what's your vision of this place? Do you have some idea on where you'd like it to go? Practical ideas on how to achieve it? Do you even agree with my perception of the dynamics here, and the implications and conclusions I came up with?
