Cities can resist, but ultimately will suffer greatly if Ford decides to cut off any funding until they comply.

All he'd have to say is something like "without your support, cities will lose out of funding that can help ease traffic, improve schools, and pay for hospitals", and he'll have enough of the voting public on his side to force municipal leadership to cave.

I think it comes down to accuracy, which is what when adding any content to OSM.

Cycle Routes may have different meaning depending on the location. My municipality seems to mark roads that link to cycling infrastructure as cycling routes, even if they aren't part of the cycling network (which are considerably more vast and usually expand across multiple municipalities, provinces, or even the country. I think to use "cycle route" for this specific example isn't accurate.

"bicycle=designated" has been all over the place from examples I've been looking at spanning 100km in either direction. Some mappers seem to only use the "designated" tag on bike paths, while others use them on roads with simple bike lanes. But there's a lack of consistency, so it's hard to know who's right in these situations.

For me, it makes a lot more sense to use the "designated" tag here, instead of "bicycle=yes" (which applies to 99% of the roads here), or the cycle route tag.

At the end of the day, I think most (i.e. non-mappers) are interested in how the data actually works for them. For example, can they see this cycling infrastructure on their bike computer, or does it still appear as a regular road because the tags aren't specific enough? To me, that would be more problematic than a "somewhat accurate" tag. But that's my opinion.

Oh yeah, there are so many other cost savings that I didn't even include. If I wasn't cycling, I'd for sure have to either get a gym membership or invest in stuff to keep in shape. Not that I don't do other things to keep fit (i.e. upper body), but I can get cardio and aerobic exercise without even setting aside extra time!

    bicycle=designated

If that's the case, here's another complication 😱

I've looked at over a dozen of the previously mapped, signed AND painted/separated bike lanes/tracks in the area, and they are all set to bicycle=yes. None are bicycle=designated.

What potential issues would come up if I'm only assigning this one bit of road as bicycle=designated. Like, will it look different on the cycleOSM layer, or will it cause differences in bike navigation routing?

  • We have bike routes all over, and they are signed with something as shown. But most of these will have a bike lane or sharrows along with the Bike Route signs. However, I ran into one road that doesn't, it's just signed. What's the best way to tag these roads? I don't want to cause confusion, but these unpainted (but signed) roads do actually lead to/from better cycling infrastructure, so they should be known. UPDATE: Thanks for all the input, guys. Having looked into this further, I'm comfortable using the designated tag, at least for this specific road. My municipality is a bit bipolar with their application of these signs. Most are signed as bike routes with toad markings, but a few are signed only. Because these "bike routes" connect to more significant cycling infrastructure, I think its more than valid to tag them as “designated” as opposed to "yes" (which would be pretty much every road). To add even more confusion to the situation, the official Cycling infrastructure map for my municipality seems to not include several areas that have both bike route signs and road markings, so i will ask them if the data is just lagging or if it needs to be updated. So, unless there's a critical reason why the "designated" tag shouldn't be used in this context, I will leave it at that.

Of course, but comparatively, it's far less expensive to maintain a bike.

And if they are maintained (i.e. waxed chain), then those costs go down even more.

Every major repair on my car(s) over the last 25 years could have bought mutliple brand new bikes. 😮‍💨

Ok, i still have a car, and my wife will sometimes use it. We've filled the tank three times this year.

EDIT: i think it's important to note that when we were both driving, it was often mindless and not planned out. Back then, we'd be filling the tank every 2 weeks at a minimum, so it was extremely expensive (and wasteful) compared to now.

Because we're also on pay-as-you-go insurance, it's dirt cheap.

What I've done over the last year or two is to calculate how much gas and insurance would have cost, had i used a car and not a bike to run errands (i exclude recreational rides or rides specifically because of the bike, like going to pick up parts).

I take the amount and transfer it to a separate bank account. In the last 12 months, it grew to over $400.

That doesn't include anything else we might have saved by not using the car.

Granted, i did invest a bit into equipment to help replace my car, like panniers and bike trailers. But they'll last an exceptionally long time, so they'll eventually pay for themselves.

That's one thing i noticed with car vs bike expenses. Most car expenses are one-and-done. You have nothing to show for it.

Bike expenses, for me, are mostly things that enhance the experience and utility of cycling.

If my wife was able to bike as much as I do, I'd honestly probably not want to own another car and invest in two ebikes instead.

    Good luck with everything!

    This is just distraction

I think this is far worse than a distraction. He's creating more division between people, and actually putting lives at risk.

In a press conference the other day, he actually went a step further about "no new bikes" and suggested that we actually REMOVE bike lanes. He also doubled-down on his stupid fucking tunnel under the 401.

He's already stripped away power from municipalities when it came to doing environmental assessments before building more urban sprawl, but this is just way more fuel to the fire.

I care about other people’s kids. I want them housed, fed, clothed, etc.

I want my tax dollars to improve other’s lives so they have what they need to be self-actualized human beings.

I won’t let them get hurt at the playground if I can help it.

I watch them when they cross the street to make sure they do it safely.

Oh geeze, yeah, I hope that what I wrote didn't come off as “not caring” about the wellbeing of other people's children, because that's absolutely not what I meant!

What I mean is that most people don't get excited about when someone else's child just spoke their first word, or took their first step. They really don't, because it's not a milestone that impacts that person's life in any meaningful way.

When someone sends you baby picture after baby picture, or their kid's school trip photos... nobody actually "cares" about those things. It occupies no space in their head past that brief moment they were told about it. That's what I mean.

If those things make you happy, there's nothing wrong with that, either!

Do cute kids put a smile on my face? Of course. But do I care that an acquaintance's child now uses the potty? Not. At. All.

    I’m pre-diabetic.

Again, I will repeat what every major health and diabetes org has to say on the matter: lifestyle will have the most impact on the course of this disease.

In fact, we know this to be true because of studies we have on twins... same genetics, different environments, one might develop the disease while the other does not.

My point is, it would be better for patients to get more support to better their environment and lifestyle, than simply providing insulin.

I say this as someone who's lived with a chronic illness (autoimmune) for over a decade, so I'm not trying to sound holier than thou. It sucks to be sick, but I'd rather get support for things known to better my condition than things that don't.

Some flashlights I own have a lockout feature to prevent this from happening accidentally.

The one bike light that doesn't have this lockout mode, or the ability to disconnect the battery by unscrewing the cap, burned through a dry bag I had it in...

Still a good light, but I had to tape a metal ring over the on/off button, so this never happens again.

I don't mind a long-click to turn off/on, and a short click to move between SOLID modes (high/low). But for the love of Christ and all the saints, any strobe mode should be a special key combination (i.e. double click).

Flashlights that have you moving through multiple strobe modes before you can get to a different brightness level, or before you reach "off" are infuriating.

Nothing wrong with you feeling that way.

As for vacations, life events, etc., I'm interested in knowing what goes on in my friend's lives... that's kind of what having a friend is about.

BUT... I'm interested in hearing about these things face to face. I couldn't care less if they're just social media spam about what they did with their spouse. That's one reason why I stopped using social media.

I’d wager that the percentage is significantly lower than the background average

I'd be curious to see the stats, because it would be interesting to know if certain professions or volunteer positions attract these people (i.e. because of their proximity to kids).

Background checks really only work if someone has a history. Everyone is a law-abiding citizen, until they are caught, arrested, and convicted of a crime. We only know of the ones who are caught, and it's not easy to catch these people.

  • I wanted to share my experience with waxing my bike chains. I was resistant to waxing my chains because it seems that a lot of people felt it was "too much work". But having to constantly clean black shit off my chains after every ride, then spend time degreasing and re-lubing, I figured I'd try waxing when I got my gravel bike. Now, thousands of KM later and having converted all three bikes to waxed, there's no way I'd go back. The time **saved** could be measured in hours per month. First, the biggest complaint is chain prep. Yeah, regardless if you're waxing or not, you'll need to prep a new chain by removing the factory grease. With waxed, you do this *once*, and no more worrying about degreasing ever again. Make like easy and get Silca's chain stripper, and it's a 10 minute, one-step process. Ongoing chain maintenance couldn't be easier. After every ride, give the chain a quick wipe (or not). My chain stays clean, even after a 200 km ride. And if you ride in wet or dirty conditions? Guess what, you're in for a LOT of work if you lube your chain. With waxed, keep a second (or third) chain ready to go, and you just swap it out (10 seconds of effort). Take the dirty chain, give it a wipe if it's only been wet, or pour boiled water onto it if you want to "reset" the chain to bare metal. Then drop it into the waxing pot for a re-wax. You don't have to stand at the pot, so there's no real time commitment here. I've spent more time completely dirtying large microfiber cloths trying to get my chain "clean" when lubed (hint: it's never clean if you use a wet lube, not without solvents and an ultrasonic cleaner). For actual immersion wax, I do it every 1000 km (sooner than you *need to*), and use a drip wax every 200 - 250 km to keep things fresh. Honestly, wax is easier, cleaner, and takes less time to maintain vs wet lube. The only downsides? The initial cost to get started. But this is offset by not having to replace chains or other components prematurely. You actually save money in the long-term when using waxed chains. Some might argue that "you can't run waxed chains in muddy or constantly rainy conditions". Well, at the same time, your wet lube isn't really helping matters in those situations, either. Waxed is still better, and you can swap chains much faster than you can clean the grinding paste from a wet lubed chain. Who would I not recommend waxed chains to? Someone who rarely uses their bike. Drip lube will be "good enough" in those cases. But anyone else would benefit from waxing their chain.

Walking my grandkid to/from school, it absolutely floors me how many dangerous drivers there are around kids. In a matter of maybe 10 minutes, I've witnessed: - at least a dozen cars illegal parked. It's not the parking that bothers me, but the fact that these cars are often parked on turns or just before intersections, making it impossible for other drivers to see small kids. - Several people not stopping at stop signs, including at the exit of the school parking lot. - One car, who completely blew through a stop sign at the front of the school, made a left turn and nearly hit a guy walking his kid. The driver didn't even slow down. - Super fucking huge pickup trucks parked in the school parking lot, but their long ass hangs well over the sidewalk near the kindergarden area, leaving very little space to use the sidewalk. - Speeding. Obviously, you have to have speeding in school zones, right? This happens every day, during drop off and pick up. I was told that bylaw were “cracking down”, but no, they aren't. If they were, our municipality would generate $5000 in fines each and every day at every school. The other day, I rode my bike past another school as kids were getting out. Not only was their massive parking lot completely full, but they had blocked the bike trail (WITH PYLONS) to make space for more cars. Then as I entered onto the road, cars were illegally parked along the road and on a bridge for a like 100m. Making it extremely difficult and dangerous to cross because they blocked visibility for me and other drivers on the road. I asked the cross guard if these students all lived out of town, requiring every parent to drive them home; he obviously didn't get my joke. Seriously, fuck cars. All of them!

I've been trying out NextDNS and comparing it to Adguard DNS (adguard-dns-.io), but unlike NextDNS, Adguard DNS' query log is quite vague, and I can't even tell if it's doing anything. 99% of the listed items in the Adguard DNS query log show up as "Processed", but the request clearly shows either advertiser or tracking as the categories. It seems that unless I actually click BLOCK, the status doesn't really list these requests as Blocked, except for a very small number. Is this normal behaviour? I assume any requests showing "processed" but not "blocked" are still going through, which is bad. NextDNS shows these same requests clearly as blocked or not, so at least I know that it's working. Anyone have any thoughts, or clarification on how it works?

I'm talking about the ads that look like listings, but they have a small "AD" text on the corner. These ads are often grotesque and offensive, and I'd rather not see them at all. I've tried various block lists, but it's not removing them. MORE CONTEXT: Sorry, I should have been more specific! The gross/offensive ads seem to only be in the Aliexpress app (Android). On the mobile and desktop browser version, I still get the "AD" listings, but they are of products related to things I've purchased or browse through (all bike related items). I'd like to get rid of those, too, but I guess the ones in the app are the worst type. I do have Adguard for Android set to filter HTTPS requests from the Ali app, so I figure it's just a matter of finding the right filter. Hopefully, anyway!
