I managed to get it to work with xbindkeys. I finally had the obvious idea of making use of xdotool inside of xbindkeys and that did the trick. Maybe I'm more slow than stupid hahaha

It's honestly been a nightmare. The only thing that retroarch picks up from autokey so far is key_press, but it only works when it wants to and takes long to respond too.
