Initial Impressions of GrapheneOS
  • EponymousBosh EponymousBosh 9mo ago 100%

I've been using GrapheneOS for a couple years now, both with and without the Google compatability apps. I vastly prefer without, but I'm lucky in that my credit union's app will function without Google.

(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?
  • EponymousBosh EponymousBosh 9mo ago 100%

My least favorite is Linux Lite. It's supposed to be a lighter, simpler version of Ubuntu but I don't think it accomplishes this at all. It's very slow for something that's supposed to be lightweight, and still includes Snaps, which are also very much not lightweight. Plus its software center is just bad, which is not great for something that's marketed at Linux noobs. Linux Mint XFCE or SpiralLinux are better options for a Linux noob who needs a lighter distro, IMO.

An improvement I'd suggest: obviously, ditch Snaps. Another would be to take a look at what Bodhi Linux does and have the "software center" run in the browser. I don't know how good this is security-wise, but it definitely speeds things up from the UX side of things.

You're allowed to be annoyed by it. That's an annoying thing to have happen. But yelling at her won't fix the situation, and as you've already noted, is only going to make things worse. Feeling angry is OK. Taking it out on someone else is not.

Can you take that emotion and do something else with it? Make a piece of art, play a shoot 'em up game, listen to an angry song, etc?

  • Does this literary device/technique have a name?
  • EponymousBosh EponymousBosh 9mo ago 80%

Not exactly, but I don't blame you for being confused. I didn't realize my own wording was ambiguous! "Counterfeit Florida Plates" is the name of the song where the type of lyrics I'm referring to are used. An example:

Steal some sunscreen/From the CVS/Use too much/And make a great big mess/Wait where shadows/Mask or hide my scent

Normally a sentence starting with a verb like that is an imperative or a command, with "you" being the understood subject. But here, the narrator is talking about himself in first person ("mask or hide my scent"). So I was wondering if that usage had a name.

  • So John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats does this thing in some of his lyrics where he'll start a sentence out with a verb as though it's an imperative, but it's from a first-person POV. There's a lot of examples but the song "[Counterfeit Florida Plates](https://genius.com/The-mountain-goats-counterfeit-florida-plates-lyrics)" is the one that comes to mind first, for me. Is there a technical term for what he's doing here? EDIT: changed wording to be less ambiguous

2024 Trans Girl Scouts To Order Cookies From!
  • EponymousBosh EponymousBosh 9mo ago 100%

Traditionally, Girl Scout Cookies are a once-a-year thing, where people will buy cookies from their local GS troops, who often set up tables at events, stores, parks, etc. But the internet has made it possible to do stuff like this, where you can get your cookies from specific places and maybe send your money where it's needed more. So for example, Troop 6000 is a GS troop specifically for kids who are homeless in NYC; if you live in a pretty affluent neighborhood and you think your local Girl Scouts are good on money, you could support Troop 6000 instead.

I'm a trans man (FTM) and while I've gone for the "shave head and let nature take its course" option, a lot of trans men seem to really like finasteride because it doesn't have as many hormonal side effects as some other treatments. It's not an at-home method but I believe you can get it from a GP/PCP, you shouldn't need to go to a specialist. A lot of guys also seem to like minoxadil/Rogaine but you need to watch out if you have cats, because it's really toxic to cats.

I'm currently using Linux Mint as well. I tried Garuda out and I did really like it, but the rolling release kept breaking NVIDIA.

I used Ubuntu back in the day but it sucks now. Snaps are the devil's work.

Basically what it says in the title. I have two cats, both female, one is 16 and one is about to turn 13. The younger of the two keeps showing up with wet paws, and has always been weirdly fascinated by the toilet. We've caught her in it a few times recently. She seems to be sitting with her back legs on the seat so she can stick her front feet into the bowl. I don't think she's playing with the water; she's never really done that, and doesn't like water much in general. The only thing I can think is that maybe she's washing her paws in it? She's a longhair cat and has some floof between her toe beans, so maybe it's easier cleaning them that way? We don't use any harsh chemicals to clean the toilet so I doubt she's in any real danger there, before anyone asks. She's not really *hurting* anything by doing this, but a) it's weird; b) it's unpleasant to have a cat climbing on you with wet paws; and c) she's a dumbass and I worry she's gonna fall in. Has anyone ever have a cat, or any other pet, do this? Any way to stop it, or do I just need to accept that my cat thinks the toilet is a foot bath?
