Tea

Good day all! I haven't been into tea since Starbucks bought my favourite tea store quite a while back. looking to get back into regularly brewing some. West coast USA here if that helps narrow it down. Thanks in advance.

Recently I’ve been trying to get more into matcha. But the equipment seemed daunting and fragile for someone like me who enjoys travel. I found a travel-friendly set at MontBell, and a good ceremony quality matcha at Nakamura. I’ve only studied it and attended a class, but haven’t made one for myself yet. Can’t wait to try these out tomorrow!

Afternoon Tea

I've always wanted to throw an Afternoon Tea party. Does anyone have any experience doing so that they'd be willing to share? I just want to hear the stories. I'm not sure if I'll ever really get the chance; none of my friends are local to me, so I'd probably just be hosting for my mom in law and sister in law, but a tiny tea party could still be fun!

I've been exploring/enjoying Sencha. And I came across the idea of cold brewing. It seemed heretical at first, as I was used to precise temperature and time. I've found that I enjoy it very much. https://www.sugimotousa.com/blog/how-to-cold-brew-green-tea-and-why-you-should-do-it#sencha

Best sampler?

Hey, folks! I'm fairly new to hot teas. I've been very much so enjoying my English and Irish breakfast teas, Earl Grey, and a few other Walmart specials. But I find that I think most of them taste weak, and i use multiple bags. I'd like to try a loose leaf, and maybe something a little stronger. I'm not a fan of green tea for the same reason, it feels weak/watery. I'm a US southerner, so I guess I sort of ruined myself to tea strong enough to get out the pot and slap you. Haha. Can anyone recommend a sampler of stronger teas? I have a fancy kettle that you can set the temperature on if they need some specific temp, as I know some teas do. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I enjoyed the Jasmine tea and the white tea, which tasted like incense smells. The green tea tasted like spinach and the oolong didnt taste like much. The fermented tea tasted like cut grass. The Cardamom Ceylon black tea didnt have a strong flavor at first but with sweetener, the cardamom really pops. I had hoped that I would like tea unsweetened so that I would have a healthy beverage but it is either no strong enough, bitter, or tastes like plant. To be fair, only the cheap store brand tea has been bitter. Any suggestions for teas to try that are more on the fruity, nutty, floral, or spice teas?

Recently tried a batch of new tea leaves (Jade/Oolong) and the first brew was so good, it made me think about sharing it with a larger community. The flavor profile of Jade is floral, light and slightly sweet. I did about 4 grams of tea with 300 ml of water (200 degrees F/ 93 C). Brewed for about 4 minutes. I wish I could upload the smell on this post! Highly recommend y'all try this tea - also as always, if you're looking to buy, whole leaf single origin is the way to go. I'm doing this gongfu style, so hoping to get another good 5-6 brews out of this. Also, I'm coming from Reddit, and noticed the tea community here is much smaller than the tea sub. Hoping this community continues to grow~

I found both the sencha and the corn tea at the same Asian International Market. I doubt it is the highest quality but it is the first japanese green tea I have tried. ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsopuli.xyz%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fb0a49405-8aea-4a4b-a47e-b5940e847d8c.jpeg)![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsopuli.xyz%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F0f919a75-3e59-4970-a45d-e4a3b373de96.jpeg)

I was suprised that none of the thrift stories had any teapots. Coffee machine pots sure, but no teapots. The third antique store had one that was the size I was looking for given I make tea for one. ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsopuli.xyz%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Ffe0a8bb5-36cc-43c1-84a6-ac90240b8ff2.jpeg)![Its a brown betty I guess and its makers mark implies it is at least 50 years old.](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsopuli.xyz%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F0b7244b8-174c-4afb-8efe-8d5c87abb913.jpeg)

It was sold to me as a 2011 gushu sheng puerh. Would be grateful for any further information. It's around 80g without the box and heavily compressed. I haven't unwrapped it yet. ![IMG_20231031_212938_522](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffeddit.de%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F118b35ee-7fc4-4901-9d5f-ecf6d7ac4d41.jpeg) ![IMG_20231031_212943_126](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffeddit.de%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fc90f0cc4-4132-46be-820f-811fe105da82.jpeg)

Cold brews?

Probably not the best time for this topic as we're heading into cold weather, but... do you drink cold brew? What teas do you use for cold brew? How long do you steep in the fridge? Do you start with room temp water or cold water?

And how do you guys find Japanese green teas? What are your favourites?

In desperate need of caffeine I whipped out the Shrimp Pu-Erh. What are you brewing today?

For me it's three kinds of oolongs, two pu-erhs, a white cake, and a couple of greens. What's yours?

For me it was a blend of oolongs aged between 1989 and 1995. It tasted buttery smooth but with a hint of a very dusty attic.

No. Unless you're doing it wrong by like.. adding sugar or something. Time for another cup, I had 2 large heaped teaspoons of Gyokuro this morning, now I'll have some China Jasmine.

I am a big chai fan, UK based, and I'm always on the lookout for a good blend. Tick Tock used to make a delicious vanilla chai rooibos and clipper still make a lovely chai blend. I wonder if anyone has good recommendations, from any source, either tea bag or loose leaf?

Tea for hot weather

I've heard that Raw (sheng) pu-erh, green and sometimes oolong teas are good for hot weather. Is it true? Do you have any recommendations or preferences on that?

A bit lighter in taste this time. Still a lovely steep of a good quality oolong. What's the last oolong your tried? Or are you planning on trying one someday?

When I drink yerba mate I often spill it accidentally because I hit the bombilla. Are there any spill proof options out there?

I left the world of tea years ago and recently was indoctrinated by the amazing taste and health benefits of Oolong.

Hi! Please make yourself at home c: **As titled - what is your preferred brew or steep method?** **What do you drink the most? Hot or cold?** *I drink a lot of oolong and pu-erh teas brewing gong-fu style and I have yet to try coldbrew c:*

This tea is very unique - it's a 2005 Shu Pu-Erh tea, but with a twist! It tastes like fried Shrimp, and don't get me wrong - it's delicious.

Shan Lin Xi bug bitten and charcoal roasted oolong in the cup. What's in yours? Please don't feel intimidated by me doing gong fu :) It's just a preference, not a must.

I'm starting my day with the High Mountain Xiong Di Zai dancong from Yuunan Sourcing. What's in your cup today?
